I have long been inspired by, and fascinated with, the human form, and have sculpted the figure in a variety of materials, including wax, wood, copper sheet metal, and most recently, clay and Encaustic. My main focus when working with the figure is our unspoken words and thoughts through facial expression and body gestures, what one might call body language. As people interacting with one another, we adopt an outward look or style to express ourselves, or who we want to be, and how we want to be related to. I’m more interested in what is happening on the inside, because that is really how we feel and is what determines how we will ultimately interact with each other. My current body of work uses animal costumes and props to distract the viewer from the conventional and what they think they know. While the figures appear physically awkward and edgy, they also seem to have a look of satisfaction or contentment on their faces. I leave it up to the viewer to create the story these figures want to tell. |
