in my encaustic, oil, and print work, i layer up and dig down to find a hidden path to meaning. repetitive shapes and marks cross the surfaces like shorthand messages; they cover what lies underneath-"the play within a play." what is on the surface is not the only story. adding and scraping away layers of color and texture express the art object as a reliquary of personal and universal information. sometimes the visual narrative unfolds like the leaves of a book or a diptych, with a spine/vertebrae; sometimes a grid underlies the forms. each mark's independent energy and translucent color fields express states of mind, matter and surprise. greco-roman painting, sculpture and drawing, asian calligraphy and joseph albers' color theories influence me. lately i have been captivated by the illumination and levitation of the light, water and landscape in southwest washington state. |
