My landscapes, however abstract, begin with an experience in a real place. Something will excite me; the structure of the scene, it’s light, the season or sometimes a certain memory. These sensations are site specific and become drawings and photos which then become realized works in the studio. Through layering diverse painterly processes, I improvise as I build a painting true to the special properties of the materials and simultaneously, in accord with my response to that landscape. Alchemy is what I’m after; my deep regard for the biological world expressed through inventive technique into a visual understanding of the place.
