Painting Statement
Glenn Hendrick works across a variety of media, weaving direct observation, memory, and a rich vocabulary of personal symbolism. Plants, creatures, and people inhabit environments that are both entrancing and threatening. Landscapes are distilled into elemental shapes, bridging waking reality, memory, and dreams.
In her recent work, Glenn explores themes of anxiety, alienation, and hope. Pure saturated colors seed an emotional undercurrent beneath the serenity of her images, in the way that existential dread can live inside of daily lives, routines, and moments of beauty. Faces stare out of reds, greens, oranges and blues- inscrutable in their expressions, serving as witness or simply observing what transpires. Some turn to the sky in waiting, whether for salvation or destruction- their lack of agency obliging them to meet whatever comes. Hands grasp for flowers from the scorched earth, or shield a face defensively. Human forms retreat amongst darkened gardens and eerily glowing trees, brought into alliance with the natural world as we all become victims of the conditions we have created.
